Obituary:
Marina Margarita (“Margie”) Ruiz passed away peacefully in her sleep early Tuesday morning, September 29, 2020. A longtime resident of Exeter, Margie was 85 years old and the proud mother of ten children, Robert, Jerry, Richard, Edward, Freddy, James, Margaret, Betty Jean, Jennifer and Albert, many of whom are college-educated, professionals and small business owners. Raising a large family while making time for each of her children (and the occasional grandchild), truly the work of a tireless magician, Margie happily fulfilled in her role as mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, homemaker, caregiver, friend, adviser and sometime disciplinarian, all with boundless energy, love, spirit and joy.
Margie was born on October 22, 1934, in San Bernardino, California, the sixth child born to her parents, Margarita Rivas and Jesus Briones, who emigrated to the United States from Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico. Her mother Margarita loved music and song, often serenading Margie for hours on end, and so naturally Margie herself similarly enjoyed music especially the classic Spanish-language “Epoca de Oro” songs and singers from Mexico. Not content with just listening to music, however, Margie loved to dance and rarely missed an opportunity to hit the dance floor.
Living by the mantra, “If you can’t say anything nice about someone, don’t say anything at all,” Margie always greeted family and friends with her warm and engaging smile which inevitably led to memorable conversations frequently interrupted by the sound of her unmistakable laugh. Margie welcomed everyone to her home with open arms and a warm embrace along with something to eat or drink, and she never turned away anyone who asked for her help.
Margie was preceded in death by her ex-husband and father of her children, Robert F. Ruiz, and her daughter, Betty Jean. She is survived by her surviving nine children, 35 grandchildren and more than 30 great-grandchildren.
