Obituary:
Mary Arlene Cloud was born Feb 2 1935 to Linzie and Oatie Henderson in McKinney TX. She was the ultimate middle child with 2 older brothers and 2 younger sisters. After a tornado leveled their house, the family packed up and moved to California. Mary graduated from Visalia High School. Shortly following graduation, she met this dashing young man, Orville Cloud. After a whirlwind 6 week romance she and Orville were married. Two weeks later Orville shipped out to Korea as he proudly served in the US Army. This marriage lasted for 69 years and produced 4 children, 6 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.
As with all lives there were happy times and trying times. The most trying time being the loss of their eldest child, Rodney, to a tragic accident in 1975. The happiest times were spent with family and friends. As a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, many of these happy times were spent with loving church family and potlucks. She also loved crocheting house slippers and afghans for all her children and grandchildren to enjoy, everyone loved getting a new pair each Christmas.
Mary’s younger married years were spent caring for her young children and doing odd jobs. Later she began working at Lindsay Olive Growers as a Sorting Supervisor. For a time she owned a second hand store in Porterville, but the one that brought her the most joy was owning and running a small bait and tackle shop at the bottom of the dam on Hwy 198 just before Kaweah Lake. She loved meeting the world travelers who stopped in on their way to the National Parks. Many holidays were spent as a family at this store as it could not be shut down to those who needed her on their travels. Her grandchildren remember well hunting Easter Eggs behind the store, one of her grandchildren for the longest time thought her name was “Grandma store” as he was always told “We are going to Grandma’s store”
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers, Ted and LJ Henderson. Son Rodney Gene Cloud, and great grandson Mitchell Wayne Bowers. She is survived by her three daughters, Cindy Castro and her husband Charlie, Becky Rossner, Penny DeJarnatt and her husband Bill. Along with 5 grandchildren Phillip Bowers, Tanya Sullivan, Jonathon Cotta, Nick Castro, Eric Castro, and Jennifer Chase and their families.
We take comfort in the knowledge Mary and Orville are reunited in heaven with our Lord Jesus Christ.
