Raymond “Ray" Sanchez 87 years of age from Exeter, passed away peacefully with his family at his side. Born in Exeter April 15, 1934, to Isaac and Ramona Sanchez. Raymond was one of 12 children. Raymond met the love of his wife in 1950 at a woman’s soft ball game in Exeter. He was attending Visalia High School, which became Redwood, at the time and Lupe was attending Exeter Union High School. He knew in his mind she was going to be his wife someday he transferred to Exeter 1951. He graduated in 1953, Lupe in 1954, they were married that July 17, 67 years ago. While attending Exeter Union High School he was very active in Future Farmers of America, and served as Secretary the first year the school reorganized the club. Before graduating from High School Ray enlisted to the Army National Guard of California and the Reserve of the Army, with the 185th Infantry, he served from 1952 through 1958. Ray worked for Hathaway Nursery, between Farmersville and Visalia, than worked for C. W. Pogue as a gardener, he and Lupe lived on the ranch, during these two jobs is where he found the love of plants and landscaping. In 1958 they bought their first home and moved into town with their baby Daughter Kathleen. In 1961 he worked for Waterman Industries and later worked for the County of Tulare, and The Housing Authority. All during this time he ran his own business, starting with yard care for many homes in Exeter, Visalia and surrounding areas, in 1962 he started Ray’s Pest Control. He held many certifications for applications that only a few others possessed. He was very proud of his accomplishments. One other major accomplishment he and Lupe did was to build their current home from the ground up. When he and Lupe lived on Peach Drive, they would go for walks pushing their Daughter Kathy in the stroller and saw the open area of Plum Drive, he said to Lupe, would you like to build a home in this area? Lupe thought it would be a good idea. As time evolved in 1963, after their son Andrew was born, they started the process of building their future home. He would always say Lupe was the best roofer, they completed their home and moved in Christmas week 1963. Ray was a very active man, loved fund raising and worked on many committees to complete many dreams of the community. As a member of Sacred Heart Church in Exeter, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He helped raise funds and help build the Classrooms at the Exeter Church and the Convent at the Farmersville Church. He was a member of B.A.C.H, band and choir helpers, there he was on the committee to raise funds to purchase band uniforms and choir gowns. He was a member of the Exeter Kiwanis Club from 1971 to present, during his years of membership he served as President and District 18 Lt. Governor and served on many committees, Easter Pancakes, Spirit of the Holidays, Relay for Life, electronic bulletin board on Highway 65/Kaweah, greeting kiosks with all the towns service clubs and churches, BBQ tri-tip at the football field during the home games and presenting dictionaries to students at schools in Tulare County. Ray had many favorite things to do like RVing with Lupe and their Bocci traveling group, visiting the western states seeing the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone Geysers and Mexico. He also enjoyed Salmon fishing with his son Andrew along the Delta in Sacramento. Trout fishing at Shaver and Coyote Lakes. The two most favorite things to do was to tinker with his Allis Chambers antique tractor collection, he accumulated 6 of them over the years. He rode them in the Farmersville Memorial Day parade giving red, white and blue flowers to the senior ladies on the parade route. One year his daughter Kathy and grandson Jacob rode along his side each driving an antique tractor. He loved parades. He would ride in the Christmas parade dressed up as Santa on his Honda Trail bike along with his grandson Jacob dressed as an Elf riding his peddling John Deer Tractor one year and his Quad another year. He participated in the New Year’s Do Dah parade, having a good time decorating his tractors. The other favorite hobby was his mini ranch south of Exeter, raising Myer Lemons, Persimmons and other a mix of different citrus verities.
