Obituary:
Leon Richard Phillips, age 81 of Visalia, CA. passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2017. Leon was born in Mount Ida, Arkansas to Ted William and Dora Beatrice Phillips. The Phillips family moved to California in 1937. Leon married Jessie Sams on March 3, 1956. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Dora Phillips, his sister Lola Terry, his brothers Jesse, Marvin and Grover Phillips and his great granddaughter Bethaney Phillips.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jessie Phillips, his daughter Debbie (John) Whitted, son Rick (Donna) Phillips, son Gary (Bertha Parrino), daughter Carla (Joe) Bradley, 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Leon retired from Consolidated Peoples Ditch in 1997. He also worked as a carpenter and many groves in Tulare County bare the fruit and nuts from trees that Leon grafted. “Legendary” Leon was an avid sportsman spending time with his brothers, sons, grandsons, family and friends hunting and fishing whenever he could. He enjoyed organizing and participating in horseshoe tournaments and has many trophies giving evidence to his expertise. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Jessie and with friends and family; particularly visiting historical sites throughout the US.
He was honorable, kind, loving, forgiving and an accepting man to all he met. He will be missed by all who were blessed to know him.
