In loving memory of a Dad so rare, Howard Olen Brant, 82, passed away on February 21, 2010. Howard was born in Niles, CA on September 8, 1927. Howard grew up I the Beaumont, Santa Barbara area where he met his soon to be wife Nellie Edith Long. The couple was marred for 42 years until the death of Nellie in 1978.
Howard proudly served in the U.S. Navy of four different destroyers during WWII. After the war the couple lived in Santa Barbara and Bakersfield until they moved to Greybull WY where Howard worked for the Union Pacific Rail Road as an electrician. In 1956, Howard and family moved back to Visalia to be near his ill father and family.
Howard soon got a job with J.C. Hammer Pump Co. where he worked until being hired with the California Division of Forestry. He worked at the Visalia and Tulare stations, Hammond Fire Station in Three Rivers and was Fire Chief for the Woodlake Fire District until he retired after 25 years of civic service.
Howard was known by all for his gentle and giving nature. He is remembered with love by his two surviving sisters, Lucille Donnelly of Tucson, AZ and Geraldine E. Jones of Visalia. He is loved and will be greatly missed by his children, Robert Brant and wife Kathy of Barstow, Donna Whittaker and husband Gerald of Woodlake, and Gary Brant for Boise, ID. Besides his wife Howard was preceded in death by one son Phillip Brant. Howard is survived by six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Howard’s last weeks were filled with joy, by the visit of a special friend, Betty Swauger of Tucson AZ. Betty was an angel sent to be near Howard and his children in his final days.
